about

This guitar piece was written during a month long pilgrimage across Northern Spain to the tomb of St James the Great in Santiago de Compostela. Along the way, I passed a sign signalling towards the Caves of Altamira in Cantabria – a name I remembered from a Steely Dan song. Discovered in 1868, they are a cave complex filled in which the walls are adorned with paintings dating back around 36,000 years. I went towards it and was underwhelmed by the fact that – due to the abundance of tourists throughout the 60’s and 70’s - the caves are no longer open to the public without joining a 21-year long waiting list. They had, however, constructed a museum with a reconstructed simulation of the caves right next to the site. The feeling of wonder at the majesty of humanity was palpable even from a distant look at the actual caves and inspired these chords.
The trombone line was pieced together back in the UK with Charlie and made even more majestic by Felicity’s flute accompaniment.
The song, to me, is an ode to man’s discovery of the divine self and the genesis of artistic expression.
